Total Physical Response Activities : KINDERGARDEN

Total Physical Response (TPR) activities greatly multioly the language input and output  that can be handled by beginning English language learners(ELLs).

Teaching Children Using TPR Method

Teaching English, especially for children, should be enjoyable, interesting, repetitive, and understandable. In doing so, there should be appropriate methods for teaching English to them. One of the alternative methods that can be applied in the classroom is the so-called Total Physical Response. This method tries to introduce some language skills or components in an action in which a teacher serves three roles: an order taker, a model provider, and an action monitor in which learners serve as models and action performers until they feel ready to speak out...... How can you use Total Physical Response in class?

Teacher starts by saying a word or phrase and demonstrating an action. Then teacher says the command and the students all do the action.

Advantages and disadvantages of TPR

Advantages:

  • It is fun and easy
  • It does not require a great deal of preparation on the part of the teacher.
  • It is a good tool for learning vocabulary.
  • Class size does not need to be a problem.
  • There is no age barrier.

Disadvantages:
  • It is not a very creative method. Students are not given the opportunity to express their own views and thoughts in a creative way.
  • It is easy to overuse TPR.
  • It is limited, since everything cannot be explained with this method. It must be combined with other approaches.

Total Physical Response

-A short introduction-

What is TPR?

TPR (total physical response) is a method of teaching language using physical movement

to react to verbal input in order to reduce student inhibitions and lower their affective

filter. It allows students to react to language without thinking too much, facilitates long

term retention, and reduces student anxiety and stress. In order to implement TPR

effectively, it is necessary to plan regular sessions that progress in a logical order, and

to keep several principles in mind.

TPR is not: Simon says, gesture based songs, simply using commands to practice English. (Cont.)
